Bandana or Bandhej is a traditional tie-dye practiced mainly in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat, India. The art work is also known as Bandana or Tie Dye or Bandana, etc. as per the regional pronunciation.
Bandana work involves tying and dyeing of pieces of cotton or silk cloth. This work, after the processing , results into a variety of symbols including, dots, squares, waves and strips. The pieces can be dyed by natural and artificial colors. The main colors used in Bandana are natural. In fact all colors in bandana are dark, no light color is used. The base color of the textile is usually a light shade of brown, turquoise, blue and pink.
The process can take almost up to a week, if intricate design is to be made. In this, a piece of cloth is first bleached and then folded into two or four layers.
Then, the folds of the material within a small motif is lifted up and tied. Each section is dipped in liquid color and tied again to bring about a contrast.
The area which is not to be dyed is then tied up with a thread. A meter length of cloth can have millions of tiny knots. These knots form a design once opened after dyeing in bright colors.
